Methods of Teeth Whitening

There are many different products and methods for whitening your teeth. The products and the methods can be both in-office and at-home procedures, so be sure to return to your dentist to see what is best for your teeth. Dentists usually recommend the in-office whitening because they have seen the procedure work the best. However, some people may not want to go through the in-office procedure and it is important to read about the at-home procedures before deciding which method is best for you.

Highly effective. Dentist applies the whitening gel directly to the teeth. The gel contains hydrogen peroxide, which prevents browning of the enamel if it is exposed to the air. Also, the gel is wrapped over the top and bottom teeth for extra protection.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening is highly effective whether you stay overnight at the dentist’s office or return on separate days to have the treatment applied.

Whitening Toothpaste

Whether you like to smile a lot and let your pearly whites do the talking or you’re simply looking to replace a lost tooth, getting a professional teeth whitener done by your dentist may not be necessary.

There are various types of over the counter teeth whitening, which can get you some pretty desirable results, and whitening toothpastes are one of them. With their convenience, they are especially suitable for people who are looking to whiten their teeth to a noticeable extent on the cheap or who want to touch up a few things before going out.

Whitening Mouthwash/Rinse

What You Will Need:

  • Your choice of whitening mouthwash and/or a custom mouth whitening rinse
  • A Towel
  • Water
  • A Mirror
  • Silicone Mold (You can buy them on Amazon or at any craft store)
  • Mixing Container
  • A Bag for your finished product

Step 1. Use the mold to create your custom mouth guard. You can either mold it around your teeth or directly in your mouth. Molding directly in your mouth will cause your hands to smell, so I recommend doing it around the teeth. (you can make more than one at the time)

Step 2. Cut off the excess parts of the mold and place it on top of the cup/jar. Use your mouth to push all the excess water out until you are left with a nice moldy tray to pour into.

Step 3. Get a mixing container and your foil.

  • fill the tray with water
  • freeze it
  • Pour the water in the mixing container
  • mix in your whitener
  • Pour and let it sit for ~10 minutes.
  • Fill in your mouth guard and let it sit for ~30 minutes.
  • Enjoy your bright teeth!

Whitening Pens

Vs. Powder

White strips, whitening pens or powder how do you keep your teeth white? And how do you know which works best for you?

Before we get to that answer, let’s look at what causes discoloration on the first place. According to Olive Crest, “Prolonged coffee and tobacco use will stain teeth in just a few months, while [smoking cigarettes] can discolour teeth in days. Coca-Cola or wine will stain teeth over time. One-time exposure to cigarette smoke can leave teeth discoloured. If you…can’t quit smoking, the best solution is to minimize exposure, use a good toothpaste daily, and practice good home care. Good home care means using a good toothpaste to brush two times a day for two minutes and flossing once a day.”

So now lets get to the question of which is best for you.

Whitening Strips

Whitening strips work a little differently than other methods. The strips themselves contain the peroxide gel already.

All you have to do is apply the strips to your teeth. Whitening strips are a great option because they are affordable and convenient. They are also less likely to cause sensitivity.

The strips deliver whitening gel to your teeth and help remove stains on and around the enamel. The benefit of whitening strips is that they stay on your teeth the entire time you are using them.

Using the strips for thirty minutes twice a day for two weeks is usually enough time to see results.

The downside of whitening strips is that they can be messy. They are essentially clear plastic strips that you apply to your teeth. Any drool or saliva will cause the gel to dilute. You also have to be aware of protecting your gloves while you sleep.

You can use clear plastic wrap to cover the strips overnight but you will need to remove the strips and wash the area before wearing a new set every morning.

The other challenge with strips is that they are disposable. Once you use up all the strips, you have to buy new ones. There is no way to reuse them.

The upside to this is that strips are also are one of the least expensive whiteners on the market.

If lower costs are a consideration for you, then this may be the route to take.

Over the Counter Whitening Gels with Mouthpiece

If you have a wide gap between your front teeth or just a few teeth that are slightly discolored, then there are teeth whitening gels that you can apply to your teeth without expensive trips to the dentist.

Read over the instructions and directions that come with the product and don’t eat, drink, or smoke while you’re using it (as this will interfere with the whitener).

Turn the tube away from the face when applying then leave it on for the recommended time (usually 30 to 60 minutes).

Afterward, brush your teeth to distribute the gel evenly and rinse you mouth to remove the gel.

Check the results in the mirror after a few days and repeat the procedure if you think it needs to be done a second time.

Go back to your regular toothpaste after you’ve finished the whitening program.

Professional Whitening Gel with Mouthpiece

As with the other whitening systems we have looked at here, the Advantage White Professional Whitening System is used after your dentist has applied a gel.

This system consists of a set of trays fitted with a mouthpiece to place in your mouth. Over the course of about a week, you will need to wear each tray for about half an hour each day, replacing the tray when it has been used twice.

The trays come in a variety of sizes, so ensure that the one that you have fits your mouth correctly.

You will need to apply a small amount of the whitening gel on the tray and place it in your mouth. You need to open your mouth and latch the tray in place, so it forms a V shape which fits securely against your teeth.

Get Your Best Results

Swallowing stimulates the release of saliva, so the whitening gel can penetrate properly.

This system does not come with any additional whitening gel, so you will need to purchase that separately. The manufacturer recommends that you use their Advantage White Supersensitizing Whitening Gel.

Remember to brush your teeth before using this system, and do not use the whitening gel more than two days in a row without cleaning your mouth.

Some people find the use of a mouthpiece too fiddly and uncomfortable and can even have difficulty breathing around it.

In-Office Laser Teeth Whitening

In most cases, you will not need any special preparation for teeth whitening. It is also best to avoid certain types of toothpaste.

Enamel safe toothpaste contains ingredients which have chemicals that prevent enamel erosion and other protective ingredients. Non-enamel safe toothpaste may include ingredients you can’t pronounce or ones that are abrasive.

Regular toothpaste, gels, and mouthwashes are safe as well as whitening strips and toothpowders.

However, avoid whitening toothpastes marketed for insurance plans or other similar programs.

The whitening whitening procedure also brings about small side effects. People sometimes report discomfort or pain. Others report sensitivity for a while.

Sensitivity usually lasts less than a day, but sensitivity to hot or cold food or liquids could last a little longer.

These symptoms should be easily manageable with over the counter pain relievers.

A. Apply the drops into your eyes before applying the whitening gel to your teeth.

B. Wear the blue sunglasses for a few hours after the procedure is completed.

You can expect excellent results with two to three applications.

Surprisingly, Crystalline UV Free teeth whitening is the best dental whitening method on the market. It's a proven safe and effective method, and not many people are aware of it.
